Majors Game of the Week
Set 9 Game- Saturday April 1st
Pirates (1-5-1) at Red Sox (6-2)
5:00 p.m. at Arguello
We have a real treat for you with our Majors Game of the Week! It's a rematch of the first modern World Series in Major League Baseball history in 1903.
The Boston Americans (who would later go on to become the Boston Red Sox) defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 games to 3 in a Best of 9 format.
The Boston Americans were led by pitcher Cy Young, who went 28-9 that season with a 2.08 ERA. The Pirates were led by SS Honus Wagner who hit .355 and drove in 101 runs. 6 years later in 1909, Wagner would pose for the most famous baseball card in history, a card that sold for $2.1 million in 2013. A card so beautiful I think it was worth that price.
The Red Sox and Pirates have never met in another World Series after 1903. And although this matchup 114 years later is just a regular season game, the ghosts of Cy Young and Honus Wagner will be watching.
It's the Pirates and Red Sox...a rematch of the 1903 World Series, in your Majors Game of the Week!!!
