We are down to the Final 6 Remaining in Playoffs. 6 in Majors, 6 in AAA, 6 in AA.

AAA Baseball - Catch the Fever

AAA Baseball - Catch the Fever

AAA Baseball.

Some say there are too many walks, too many strikeouts, not enough balls put in play.
There are too many errors, and the pace of play is drawn out.
And that is certainly true.

But as Ralph Barbieri of KNBR used to say, “two things can be equally true”.

AAA can also produce the most exciting games, especially playoff games.
And that was most certainly true on Tuesday May 23rd.

In Majors if you are down 5 runs in the last inning, you have a chance.
Unfortunately it’s the Jim Carrey “so you’re telling me there’s a chance???” chance.

In AAA if you are down 5 runs in the last inning, you really do have a chance.
Due to the sheer unpredictability of AAA games, playoff games can be wild.

Case in point, last year’s 2nd round game between the visiting River Cats and Mudcats.
The River Cats were down 7 runs in the 6th inning, when suddenly the Mudcats pitchers lost the strike zone.
As the sun sank lower and lower, the River Cats gradually drew closer and closer until they tied the game 16-16 after 6 innings.
The game was called due to darkness and was played a few days later.

When the game resumed, the River Cats scored one run in the top of the 7th inning to take the lead.
After 2 quick outs, the Mudcats bottom of the lineup got 4 consecutive hits to win the game 18-17.
As Manager of the River Cats, I will never forget that game.
It was one of the most exciting games I have ever been a part of, and could only happen at AAA.

When it comes to AAA, we heed the words of ex-NFL Coach Jim Mora..."you think you know, but you don't, and you never will."

Tuesday May 23rd was Showdown Tuesday in AAA.
There were 2 games being played simultaneously at Stadium and Laureola.
Both featured the #1 seed against the #2 seed in the National and American league.

The #2 Mudcats and #1 River Cats squared off in the National League.
This game was a wild affair with the visiting Mudcats having 3-0 and 9-3 leads only to see the River Cats battle back to tie it at 9-9.
The game went into extra innings when the Mudcats pushed across a run in the Top of the 7th.
The River Cats threatened but couldn’t muster up one more rally and fell just short 10-9.

Meanwhile at Laureola, the #2 Sea Wolves were battling the 13-1 #1 Mud Hens.
The Sea Wolves were up 9-5 in the bottom of the 6th inning.
The Mud Hens cut the deficit to 9-7 and had the bases loaded with 2 outs.
Tate Cohen hit a walkoff triple deep to center clearing the bases and giving the Mud Hens a 10-9 victory.

How about AAA bringing it for the playoffs!!!
Two incredible playoff games, high drama, #1 vs. #2, and both 10-9 scores.

And while the winning teams mobbed each other and celebrated, the losing teams were disappointed being on the short end of an ESPN Instant Classic.

But in Little League, there is much to learn from losing.
How to be a good sport.
How to handle adversity.
How to deal with failure and come back stronger.

The good news for the River Cats and the Sea Wolves, and the public, is that these two games might happen again.
If the River Cats and Sea Wolves win their next game, it sets up a rematch for the American and National League Championship.

AAA baseball.
Walks and strikeouts may not be your cup of tea.
But wild, entertaining, passionate, and unpredictable playoff games is everyone’s cup of tea.

The two games played on Tuesday May 23rd represent not only the best AAA has to offer, but the best Little League has to offer.

So you're telling me there's a chance??? Yeah!!!! There is always a chance in AAA!
